The Future of Sky Scrapers
‘Sprawl Catcher Towers’ are not limited to centralized lobby spaces in favor of total fluid access between towers, highways and the city transport grid. Under the assumption that driverless cars drop people off, or commuters coordinate their transport needs using apps, drop off areas become essential space planning organizers. The use for massive car storage in residential spaces gets reduced in favor of public spaces similar to parks and squares.
Their location is the result of multiple urban transport speeds. These towers act as highway and street speed tracers and get implanted in strategic areas within the city transport infrastructure, where car/bus/train speed and daily traffic get interpolated forming an optimum exit spot or ‘tower-seed’. The tower core is part of a fluid communication system with the city’s highways, speculating both with current and future transport systems that have the ability to deploy city dwellers at various levels above ground, as well as in between towers. Horizontal and vertical transport systems, now blended, provide the skyscraper with the unprecedented opportunity to be navigated with close similarity to current city pedestrians, cyclists and drivers, but freed from confinement to ground level. Moreover, multiple points of entry and communication between towers and with the city’s transport system replace the exclusive access to the vertical typologies through ground floor lobby access. Elevators now serve as streets, feeding units in a similar way single houses and multiple housing units open directly from the sidewalk to the interior or through shared entrance patios to each unit’s doorstep.
The façade element pulls air into the interior, sourcing from less polluted altitudes towards those levels near the highway. Through the change of air temperature the current generated flows into the building wherever clean air is needed. Thus, the soft façade served the double purpose of public and private balconies as well as a bio-mechanical system of air detoxification, it becomes the tower’s breathing system, being more robust near lower levels.
